In fact, a couple of them are actually treating me nice, although most of them just ignore me.”
“And the girls?”
“Well, the girls are teasing me a little, but I’ll be O.K.”
“What do they tease you about?”
“Well, they, uh, well they sort of ask me if you’re my boyfriend now” Jeannie answered shyly with her head pointing down to the ground.
“What do you tell them?”
“I tell them no,” Jeannie answered, “But, well, one time I did say that I’d never tell. I guess I shouldn’t have done that. They all know I couldn’t be your girlfriend, I couldn’t be anyone’s girlfriend.”
Patrick stopped walking, turned to Jeannie, and said “That’s crazy Jeannie. You’re letting those girls put ideas in your head. There’s nothing wrong with you, you’re just a little younger than they are, that’s all.”
Jeannie laughed and said “Yeah right! A little younger, a mouth full of metal, and flat chested, I hate the way I look!”
Jeannie started crying. Patrick put his arm around her.
That made her feel good and in a little while, she was O.K. and said “Thanks, I’m O.K., we’d better go before someone comes along and sees us and tells everyone!”
“Would that be so terrible, if someone saw us?”

Excerpt From Chapter 1

Just then the bell rang and everyone turned to go in. Since it was the first day back at school, no one had been assigned lockers yet or even knew what teachers they would have. All they knew at this point was the name and room number of the teacher that would serve as their homeroom teacher.
One of Patrick’s friends from last year, Fred, said “I sure hope we don’t get old Mrs. Ellinger for English this year. Man I can’t stand that woman!”
“She’s O.K., you just have to learn what makes her happy and go with that.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, you know, last year you did everything you could to torment her, no wonder she was always on your case” laughed Patrick.
“Yeah, well I ain’t gonna kiss her butt!”
Then Patrick said “Well I never had a problem with her; do you think I kissed her butt?”
“Uh…well no, I….I wasn’t saying that.”
“Just try not to get on her nerves, and maybe she won’t get on yours” said Patrick.
“Yeah, well maybe we won’t get the old bat again this year.”
